ANDERSON (Laurie).
Words in Reverse.

Third edition. 8vo., [16pp.], stapled wraps. Signed and inscribed by Anderson on the wrapper in black marker pen: “To Robert hi from Laurie Anderson”. Buffalo, NY, Top Stories, 1983.

A small price tag on upper portion.

A chapbook published as Top Stories 2, a periodical of prose by women authors specialising in experimental writing (the series also included Jenny Holzer, Kathy Acker and others, this being the only issue to be reprinted). An entirely text-based booklet featuring ‘extracts from Like A Stream (1978) – a piece for string ensemble, tape bow instruments, and voice – and Americans On The Move (1979) – an extended series for voice, electronics, film, and instruments’. The cover photo by Marcia Resnick shows Anderson using ‘The Tape Bow Violin’, an instrument that substitutes a tape head for the bridge and a strip of tape for the hair of the bow; the tape contains a recording that could be played forwards and backwards by drawing the bow across the head. Some of the texts included were later reworked into songs or incorporated into other performances.
